Lost City of the Goats

The humans who built this place have been gone for maybe hundreds of years. Lucky them because it smells like goat pee.

I had no idea what I was in for. We had already had a perfect day visiting Kealakekua Bay and Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park.

I told her, “just grab some versatile amphibious footwear and I’ll pick you up at the airport”

Also known as the City of Refuge, the sanctuary boasts 17 foot thick walls and fresh water pools.

Hawaii has a violent history. People fleeing violence were welcomed at Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau

Then we found out about the 1871 trail

if you see the magic hat you know there’s adventure afoot.

monkeys on the loose in the U.S.A.?

the dummy who originally brought them to Florida didn’t know monkeys could swim

it was just a legend until it wasn’t

I wanted to build a monkey army

and you have to know how serious I am about that

but then I found out that a large majority of the monkeys have herpes- which fatal to humans and can be transmitted through bite or scratch. So maybe we wouldn’t spend THAT MUCH time with them but I had to at least go hang out with them. And if there wasn’t enough time (we only had 72 hours to go from Portland to Tampa Bay to the Ocala Forest and back) then we at least needed to meet them and take some selfies.

Silver Springs State Park

first day we took the kayaks hoping to spot them along the riverbank

one of us paddles and the other one takes selfies

so then we gave up on the river and tried the savannah grasses growing through the sand

still no monkeys

and then through the bog

still no monkeys

we ended up giving up for the day but keeping our vibe high. I wasn’t ready to admit defeat and held on to the belief that there was no way we could possibly fly across country and fail in the mission.

so we took the night to relax and regroup

and then came back the next day on a super short schedule

the plane home waits for nobody

we decided to stay close to the river but walk the shoreline

Then right when we were about to give up the mission

I HAD ONE LAST PLAN TO TRY

she would never lie and you can see the truth in her eyes…
